THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT – A REVIEW.

The kids might be, but the film isn’t…

I had high expectations for this film and quite rightly so. It has all the makings of a good film; good actors, and a unique selling point. Sadly these things just weren’t enough.

Essentially, this film is about two teenagers breaking free of their secure, naïve lives and finding their dad (their mum’s sperm donor). It should be a sensitive film about the different types of family and maturity and identity but, in reality, it’s little more than a cheap rom-com (apart from the fact that it’s not romantic and not comedy based).

The beginning is dubious and, minutes in, I question the lead roles characterisations and depth of portrayal of actual lesbians when the two women watch gay male porn… Hmmm, last time I checked lesbians like women, not men. And whilst this is (poorly) explained later, I can’t help but feel that it started the film off in a bad way.

To cut a long story short, the kids meet their dad, discover he’s a bit of a rebel and introduce him to their mums. It’s a shaky first introduction but the women grow fonder of him. One even grows so fond that she sleeps with him. Multiple times.

Yup. That happened.

This frustrated me so much. Why on earth did she sleep with him? From what I can see there is little, if any, motivation to cheat yet she does and with a man! No, things weren’t great in her relationship but is sleeping with a man going to help?

Of course, her wife finds out and is, understandably, angry. This leads to a whole lot of door slamming, shouting and crying in the house from everyone. But, without much reasoning and explanation, it all seems to boil down and return to normal. (A few things go on that allows this to happen but not a great deal…)

This film is disappointing and doesn’t show lesbian relationships and their families in a good light. Its characters are flimsy and under-researched and its storylines are unrealistic and actually quite insulting. Not a fan.

Yes I have watched it too. Really disappointed and thought it was another badeexample of lesbian life. Probably made by a straight person. Yes we all have the same struggles but it wad like watching a straight movie played by two women. Also didn’t get the male porn and sleeping with the donor. She must have been a hasbian lol

It was such a bad film! I really wanted to like it but I just couldn’t… Completely agree with all you said – it was not a true portrayal of lesbians!

  2. I have mixed feelings, some of which I admit stem from my love of both Julianne Moore and Annette Bening, which automatically cause me to like the movie at least a little simply because they’re both in it. And, considering my GF/wife of nearly 20 years left me for someone else, I could buy into the “things get stale and people stray” storyline, but also thought having her cheat with a guy did lesbians a disservice – especially in combination with the gay male porn thing. There were way too many penises in that lesbian relationship …

But speaking of GMP, my Ex loved it and actually amassed quite a collection prior to free porn being so readily available online. And once when we were at the Adult Entertainment Expo, one of the GMP vendors said they had quite a few lesbian customers. Apparently there’s a whole subculture of lesbians who dig watching dudes do it. Who knew???

Oooooh interesting! Personally I’ve never seen the appeal (other than a bit of intrigue) and I’m really surprised that some lesbians do actually frequently watch it!

Aww thanks so much for your review. I am yet to watch this film, and like yourself have been hugely looking forward to it! Now it sounds like it’s gonna annoy me if I watch it!! cheers for taking the time to write it up.
    🙂
